The Corps of Royal Engineers - Ubique Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt (Everywhere, Where Right and Glory lead)

The motto of the Royal Engineers (RE) is 'Ubique' meaning 'everywhere'; physically and conceptually the Sappers, our nickname, are hardwired into joint effects in all arenas. Sappers are employed throughout the area of operations, from reconnaissance to facilitating the port of disembarkation. They are proud to be ubiquitous.

The founding principles of the Royal Engineers are: Live, Move, Fight. These words show the hierarchy of need on operations and the Sappers support these needs at the tactical, operational and strategic level supporting the military mission but also other campaign effects, such as reconstruction and development.

Live. The RE play a key role in helping the Army survive. They provide Force Protection from the enemy, construct camps and provide utilities such as power and water across the area of operations.

Move. Engineer support is critical to maintaining friendly freedom of manoeuvre on the battlefield and denying the same to the enemy. They work at the strategic level in ports and airfields, the operational level by maintaining lines of communications such as roads and at the tactical level providing gap crossing and obstacle breaching capability.

Fight. Sappers provide intimate, close and specialised support on the battlefield. They support combat troops in the assault and in defence as well as providing 'soft effect' through influence and Host Nation capacity building.

To achieve these effects the RE follow the mantra of Design, Resource, Construct. Whether it be a platoon defensive position or a camp the size of a small town the application of fundamental engineering principles is the key to success.

Essential to the RE capability is the utility of sappers; each is Triple-Traded as Soldier, Combat Engineer and Tradesman. The variety of roles and tasks expected of the RE requires a mix of generalist and specialist capabilities. While every soldier can fight, and have done so in every conflict, each is trained combat engineer as well as individually holding one of a huge range of specialist artisan skills from surveying to bricklaying and from geographic technician to electrician. On top of all of this many Royal Engineers hold additional specialisations in areas such as the commandos, parachutists, military divers or in EOD.

Sappers' multiple skills make them employable across the mosaic of conflict. Valuable assets, everywhere.

The Corps of Royal Engineers is structured as below:

25 (Close Support) Engineer Group. 25 Group consists of 3 Regular and 1 Reserve Regiment and is designed to support the UK's Warfighting Division; 3 (UK) Armoured Division. It contains 2 x Armoured Engineer Regiments and 1 x Mechanised Engineer Regiment which will transition to be the only STRIKE Engineer Regiment within the British Army.

23 Parachute Engineer Regiment. The Parachute Engineer Regiment is configured and designed to deliver close engineer support 16 (Air Assualt) Brigade.

24 Commando Engineer Regiment. This unique unit provides close engineer support to 3 Commando Brigade.

8 Engineer Brigade. 8 Engineer Brigade contains the majority of the specialist engineer capabilities as well as Defence's General and Force Support Engineers. It also has a remit to generate close support engineers for light role forces within 1 (UK) Division. The Brigade is split into three groups.

12 (Force Support) Engineer Group. This group provides support to Theatre Entry, CBRN and General Support engineering to Divisional level operations. One Regiment delivers close support engineering for UK Light and non-aligned forces. It also provides the lead Air Support Squadron in support of the Royal Air Force. It consists of 4 x Regular and 2 x Reserve Regiments. In addition, it commands the UK 's only Wide Wet Gap Crossing Squadron based in Germany.

29 (EOD and Search) Group. This group provides EOD and Military Search support across the globe and in support of the UK SF, Police and other government departments. It consists of 2 x Deployable EOD & Search Regiments, 1 x home based EOD & Search Regiment and Defence's only Military Working Dog Regiment.

170 (Infra Support) Group. This is the home of the Sappers' specialist construction engineers. Highly qualified professional engineers provide Infrastructure consultancy, project management, engineering design as well as contract and facilities management.

Royal School of Military Engineering Group. The RSME Group consists of a number of Training organisations including 2 x Engineer Training Regiments and the EOD and Search School.
